His performances have included radio recordings for the BBC and the Swiss Broadcasting Corporation as well as concert appearances alongside the soprano Jessye Norman and the jazz saxophonist Barbara Thomson. A collaboration with the highly-regarded violinist and composer Simos Papanas led to an invitation to give the UK Première of Papanas’s ‘Suite for George Demertzis’ in London in December 2006; and in October 2008 he gave the World Première of a Violin Sonata written specially for him by Stephen Matthews. Commissions from the composers Bennett Zon and Jeremy Thurlow are currently in progress: both will receive their World Premières at Kings Place, London, in 2012.
In 2010 Rupert made the World Première recordings of the Violin Sonata by Arthur Bliss and of the A major Violin Sonata by Henry Walford Davies with the pianist Matthew Rickard for EM Records (EMR CD001). The disc, which also includes the Violin Sonata of York Bowen, was released in March this year to glowing critical acclaim: it was named as ‘Recording of the Month’ by MUSICWEB INTERNATIONAL, the duo’s playing being described as “fiery to the point of molten” and “completely dedicated and immersed”; BBC Music Magazine also commended the CD: “Besides bombproof tuning and serious reserves of firepower, [Luck’s] musicianship offers full-throated, gloss-free fullness of tone which would impress in any context”; whilst International Record Review highlighted the disc’s “inspiring confidence” and “real authority”, stating: “Luck and Rickard offer an ideal combination of enterprising programming, some impressive musical archaeology to bring these works to life, and superb playing”.
As well as his busy schedule as a soloist and chamber musician, Rupert is active as a writer and speaker on the performing aspects of music, and he has presented lecture-recitals, seminars and masterclasses at the Universities of Bristol, Cambridge and Oxford, at University College London, and for the Centre for the History of Music in Britain, the Empire and the Commonwealth. He has authored papers and articles for the British Music Society, the Arthur Bliss Society, and the English Music Festival; and, with the kind permission of the Royal College of Music and of Dr Anthony Wilson, he is currently preparing a performing edition of the unpublished Violin Sonatas by Walford Davies, the manuscripts of which are housed in the RCM Library Archive. He is also the editor of the hitherto unpublished Violin Sonata of Arthur Bliss.
